Rest Differential: Does Extra Rest Actually Win Games?
We tested whether teams coming off extra rest beat the closing line across 5,295 games from 2006 to 2025. They don't — the rest is already in the price.
Everybody knows the team coming off a bye is dangerous, and the team playing Thursday after a Sunday road trip is running on fumes. It is one of the first things a survivor-pool writer will tell you to look at. So we tested it properly, on 5,295 real games, and it came back flat.
What we tested
The hypothesis: teams with a rest advantage — more days off than their opponent, most obviously off a bye week — win more often than the betting market expects them to.
The important word is "more than expected". Rested teams do win a bit more often. That is not in dispute and it is not interesting. The question is whether they win more often than the price already implies. If a rested favourite is listed at 72% and wins 72% of the time, there is no edge there — only a correct price.
How we tested it
Every game was priced from real bookmaker moneylines pulled from the historical odds archive, then de-vigged so the two sides add to 100%. That de-vigged number is the market's honest win probability. A factor only counts as an edge if games matching it beat that probability by more than chance would explain.
- Every regular-season and postseason game from 2006 through 2025 with a usable moneyline.
- Rest days computed from real kickoff dates for both teams, giving each game a rest differential in days.
- Games bucketed by that differential, then each bucket's real win rate compared against the summed de-vigged market probability for the same games.
- Result expressed as a z-score: how many standard errors the real outcome sat away from the market's expectation.

Across every rest bucket, the gap between real win rate and market-implied win rate stayed inside noise. A z-score under about 2 is the statistical equivalent of a shrug; ours never got past 1.17, and that was the best-looking bucket of the lot, before any correction for the fact that we tested several buckets at once.
Read this bit twice
A factor can be true and useless at the same time. Rest matters to football. It does not matter to your pick, because the people setting the line know the schedule as well as you do.
What it means for your picks
Do not upgrade a team because it is coming off a bye, and do not fade one because it is on a short week. If the rest situation changed the team's real chances, it changed the price first. Pick the team the market says is safest, and spend your attention on things the market cannot see yet — which is mostly late-breaking injury and weather news. That is the one timing effect that did survive testing, written up in late-week information timing.
